Issue #20: Overshoot

Global temperatures are being pushed past the 1.5 °C threshold. Every year, we overshoot the Earth’s capacity to sustain life, and those least responsible often bear the heaviest burdens. In a time where the word “unprecedented” has been rendered meaningless, and world events illustrate that we have no rule book to turn to, we stumble into uncharted territory. Thus, we invite submissions for the 2025/26 edition of Tvergastein on the theme of “Overshoot.”

We ask:

• What forces have propelled us beyond planetary and political thresholds?

• How can we understand the momentum, exhaustion, and excess of our time?

• In the face of overshoot, where can we seek resistance, adaptation, or renewal?

As an interdisciplinary journal, we welcome all approaches – academic and artistic, from the natural sciences to the humanities. We encourage essays, polemics, research articles, fiction, poetry, photo series, and visual art that engage with the theme.

The deadline to submit your work: TBD

Tvergastein accepts submissions in two categories: Shorter op-ed pieces (2,000 - 5,000 characters including spaces) and longer articles (10,000 - 20,000 characters including spaces), in either English or Norwegian. Submissions in other languages could potentially be accepted - please simply send a request to the team. References must be in Chicago 17 author-date style.
We also welcome artwork, photos and poems.
